CPF Accomplishments

CPF has a long record of achievements. Every item is the result of volunteer labor and/or generous contributions from community members who are dedicated to preserving the unique character of Cazenovia.

2008
  • Raised $14,000 through "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" fundraiser.
  • Sold Ambrose property on Rt 20 East and retained an easement to ensure there is always open space at the Eastern edge of the village.
  • Sponsored a series of nature walks throughout the summer on CPF trails and in locally noteworthy habitats.
  • Completed and updated Baseline Documentation on 13 easement properties. Received grant through the NYS Conservaton Partnership Program to accomplish the work.
2007
  • Hired Judy Gianforte as Environmental Project Manager to expand CPF's ability to acquire and manage easements.
  • State awards Farmland Protection Grant to Reed Farm (434 acres) and Greyrock Farm (272 acres). CPF aided in applications and will hold the conservation easements on both farms.
  • Partnered with town and CACDA on involvement in Scenic Byways Project.
2006
  • Suppported adoption of village historic preservation ordinance.
  • Received easement for Elliot property on Sullivan Street that limited development to 2 houses on the west side of the street.
  • Raised $50,000 for farmland protection through a Gala event sponsored by Tom Anderson and Marc Schappell.
  • Partnered with Town of Cazenovia as easement holder for New York State Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program. Aided in the preparation of the PDR application for Critz Farm and received a farmland protection easement on the farm.
2005
  • Continue active pursuit of development possibilities for the Route 20 East property that are compatible with CPF goals.
2004
  • Received a bequest from Peggy Hubbard of 115 acres of wooded land for trail and conservation purposes, which ties into trails on the Auchincloss gift, Sherman's Gulch and Faichild Hill.
  • Sponsored Boy Scout's grant application to CNY Community Foundation for renovation work at the Loyster Lodge.
  • Published and promoted a trail map to raise awareness of CPF's extensive trail system.
2003
  • CAPP report is completed by planner and accepted by Town and Village boards. The town implemented some recommendations for protection of the lake. The Village obtained more than $500,000 in NYS grants based on the report.
  • Awarded two grants for environmental enhancement and stabilization in the Willow Patch. The Central New York Community Foundation grant of $5,000 was matched by the Cazenovia Restoration Corporation.
2001
  • Received 11 acre wetland at the end of Gillette Lane for conservation program.
2000
  • Purchased 108 acres on Route 20 East, a part of the Greenbelt, to block large scale commercial development.
  • CPF's Gorge Trail becomes part of the Link Trail, and thereby part of a national network of trails.
  • Participated cooperatively with the Village in a joint fundraising program for the new bathhouse at Lakeland park.
1999
  • Co-sponsored the Cazenovia Area Planning Project (CAPP) with the Cazenovia Chamber of Commerce. CPF donated $10,000 to help fund a professional planning firm. Other participants such as Cazenovia College, the Cazenovia Lake Association, and the Town and Village Boards agreed to participate and make substantial financial contributions. Ten other community organizations and the town of Nelson and Fenner became part of the 34 member task force.
  • Began assisted financing program with Oneida Savings Bank. Qualifying projects are given loans with an interest rate 50% below normal. Properties must be located in Cazenovia, New Woodstock, Nelson, Erieville, or Fenner.
  • Purchased lot on Willow Place to protect Carpenter's Pond and neighborhood.
1997
  • Received conservation easement from Paul Petraikis for 90+ acres on two sides of Cobb Hill Road.
  • Purchased old railroad right-of-way from Ballina Road to New Woodstock for trails.
  • Worked with Village of Cazenovia on Main Street Project.
1995
  • Received 40 acres of land from Sarah Knapp Auchincloss in honor of members of the Sedgwick, Hazard, Knapp, Burlingame and Hubbard families.
  • Received 41 acres of floodplain and woodland on Rippleton road from Chester and Graham King and their niece Julie Von Schrader.
1994
  • Given Lorenzo Farms lot (7 acres) as an asset property for resale.
1992
  • Received a National Park Service grant from the River, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program.
1991
  • Received 48 acres around Sherman's Gulch to extend trails.
  • Saved historic 19th Century gatehouse on the dike near Carpenter's Pond by combining efforts with the Village trustees and NYS historic preservation officials.
  • Donated $10,000 to the Village's Albany Street Beautification project.
  • Received an architectural easement on 9 Albany Street.
1990
  • Received $25,000 grant from the Kaplan Fund's Rural New York Program for alternative land planning for parcels of 50 or more acres. Matched by the Mather Fund and members.
1988
  • Received Carpenter's Pond from Nannie Hubbard Oakman.
  • Adopted The Land Use Guide for the Town of Cazenovia, as did the Town and village Boards.
  • Began work with Rose family on protection through easements and careful subdivision on their environmentally sensitive farm (670 acres) in New Woodstock.
1987
  • Purchased the 92 acre Meadows Farm on Rippleton Road to prevent inappropriate subdivision and to preserve the scenic and agricultural character of Cazenovia. It was resold with protective covenants for use as a farm.
  • Updated and reprinted Cazenovia, The Story of an Upland Community.
  • Received the Willow Patch, five acres in the middle of Cazenovia, as a gift.
  • Made a low interest loan and donated consulting services to the Methodist Church for repairs to the tower.
1986
  • Gave 1850 manuscripts, donated by a local woman, to the Cazenovia Public Library.
1985
  • Purchased 25 acre Ledyard Tract (now Fairchild Hill) at the south end of the lake. The land is used for CPF trails, is a part of the Greenbelt and is designated "forever wild."
  • Contributed money for restoration of the Lakeland Park wall and iron fence.
  • Contributed $7,500 to Cazenovia College for exterior restoration of the theatre with the provision that the result meet the standards of the CPF Architectural Review Committee.
  • Purchased 2.5 miles of the old railroad right-of-way along Chittenango Creek north of Cazenovia for use as the Gorge Trail.
  • Began a conservation easement program and a trail program.
  • Acquired an architectural easement on the Lincklaen House in return for restoration services.
1983
  • Sent Historic District information to Albany for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Sold Lehigh Valley railroad depot with architectural easements.
1982
  • Sold the Gray lot on Lincklaen Street, south of the Methodist Church, to the church. The resulting $17,000 was placed in a revolving low-interest loan fund established to assist those doing restoration in Cazenovia.
  • Donated $500 to the New Woodstock Historical Society to expand their building.
1981
  • Actively involved with the Cazenovia Community Resources Project, a cooperative effort between the Town of Cazenovia and the National Trust for Historic Preservation devoted to studying ways to protect the rural character of the community. CPF donated $1,000.
1980
  • Began participation in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Rural Resources pilot project.
  • Hosted seminar for homeowners in the historic district.
  • Contributed $5,000 toward matching a $30,000 grant given for restoration of the Gothic Cottage and worked with the Cazenovia Rotary Club to raise the balance needed.
